Trailer: The Fighter
Do you want to feel all warm and fuzzy inside? Do you feel like telling yourself – Hey! – I can do it…nothing can stand in my way! Do you want stand up and cheer as our hero beats the impossible odds? I bring to you the trailer for The Fighter. There has been quiet Oscar buzz around this film and the trailer proves that it’s definitely Oscar bait. The Rocky-esque “against all odds” theme, Christian Bale losing a ton of weight and looking the part of a crackhead, and the dramatic score throughout screams “PICK ME! PICK ME, ACADEMY.”
I have beef with this trailer, though. After watching it, there doesn’t seem to be much left to tell. They seem to give the entire film away in 2 1/2 minutes. I cannot stand when films are marketed this way. We, as the audience, are not dumb (I hope). You can tease us, show us glimmers of greatest from the film, but please do not show us the entire arc of the story.
Synopsis
Based on a true story, The Fighter, is a drama about boxer “Irish” Micky Ward’s unlikely road to the world light welterweight title. His Rocky-like rise was shepherded by half-brother Dicky, a boxer-turned-trainer who rebounded in life after nearly being KO’d by drugs and crime. Ward fought throughout the mid-β80s and β90s, but heβs best remembered for three battles with Arturo Gotti, two of which went down as the greatest in the history of the sport.
