What does this mean? My brain just melted. But maybe it further layers the “dream within a dream.” As time slows down — so would the music. Right?

Whoa.

After careful thought, I truly feel I have come to a logical and definitive thought on what really is going on throughout this amazing film. There are a million explanations and thoughts about this across the web, but this is one I truly believe (mostly because I thought of it myself, naturally).  Maybe the 2nd viewing will change my mind, but for now…

…it all seems to stem around Cobb’s wife, Mal (Marion Cotillard). The “inception” going on throughout the film is really Mal trying to break her husband free from his dream world. This is one of many reasons she always pops up throughout his subconscious. She delves deeper and deeper into his layers of dream levels in an attempt to convince him that he has yet to come back to reality . When she jumps from the ledge, she is in his dream — trying to get Cobb to follow along and wake himself up rather than continue digging deeper into limbo.

A few things to ponder:

Christopher Nolan spent over 10 years perfecting this script. You can be assured that every scene, every piece of dialogue, and every set piece is there for a specific reason.

• Why do you think Michael Caine had the same brown outfit on in both of his scenes (classroom in Paris and Los Angeles airport terminal)?
• Why didn’t the kids ever age when Cobb supposedly was globe trotting and spending 50 dream years (over 2 real years) with his wife?
• Remember the scene where Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) told Ariadne (Ellen Page) that the dreamer needs to have a totem to let them know when they are dreaming and when they are in reality (Cobb’s totem was a small spinning top that would spin eternally in the dream state, but topple in reality.)?  Arthur was very clear that she should be the only one to know everything about the totem. But Cobb’s small spinning top totem was originally his wife’s. Hmm…
• Do you ever truly see how Cobb gets to any specific scene (the Ocean, Paris, etc)? “You never remember the beginning of a dream…”

And how about this:

• Did you notice how quickly Page’s character picked up on the dream world manipulation techniques? I’m thinking that her character (and the rest of the cast) are working alongside Mal and her father (Michael Caine) to execute the inception on Cobb in an attempt to save his life. How else do you explain their willingness to go deeper and deeper into his madness without any real objections? Let’s take it a step further. What if the seemingly minor character by Michael Caine was actually the true ARCHITECT of Cobb’s dreams? Along with his daughter (Mal), he is working to bring Cobb back.

Mal gets more and more desperate to save Cobb with the ledge set-up being her final act of desperation. Cobb continues to push himself further and further into limbo as the film moves on.  I’m thinking THE ENTIRE FILM WAS COBB’S DREAM. How many levels of limbo dreamscape, we will never know. But he is dreaming (and lost) throughout. How does this explain one of the final scenes with Saito (as the old man)? Not really sure, to be honest. They were both in limbo, though.

There are so many ways you can debate this idea of MAL BEING THE ONE PERFORMING INCEPTION. That is the brilliance of this film. A great film should spark conversation, debate, and deep thought. Not only will Inception get better over time, it potentially will shake the dumb out of Hollywood for a short time. Scratch that. The dumb will continue to haunt us throughout many new releases, this was just an aberration. Sigh.

Either way, I’m just happy that I saw a film that still marinates in my head days later. Thank you Christopher Nolan.

As we enter the final weeks before the release of Inception, a few more details about the film have been released. They have done a superb job of teasing audiences with this film. It looks intriguing. It has an amazing cast and director, but what the hell is it?  The featurette here gives you a few glimpses into what’s in store for us. If you want to go into this with a clean slate, don’t watch it. There are no spoilers, but it definitely gives you a better idea of the basic storyline. I have high expectations on this one. Not only does it have the potential to be the best movie of the summer…it could be one of the best in 2010.

Inception is EASILY my most anticipated film of the summer. Check that, this has been my most anticipated film of the year. I’ve been talking about it since I started this blog and have been intrigued from the start. I don’t have a clear view of what it’s all about, but it seems to be the love child of Dark City and Dreamscape.

The Director

Christopher Nolan simply has not made a bad movie. Following, Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight — all truly amazing films. Nolan is able to bring intellect into the mainstream, which is a fine tightrope to walk on.

The Cast

Mr. DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Goron-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Lukas Haas, Michael Caine — this cast is unbelievable. Not only does it tout the future of Hollywood’s Power Actors (Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page) it also has some of the best actors in the game (Leo DiCaprio and Michael Caine).  This cast should prove to you that this film is at least worth a shot.

The Music Score

Get ready to be pounded in the skull by Hans Zimmer once again. Just like he did with Dark Knight, the score is pulsating, nerve wracking, and perfect.

The Story

Who knows?! And that’s what’s so great about it. This is a summer blockbuster film opening in July. Watching the trailers, reading the synopsis, it doesn’t matter…this film looks bat-shit crazy. Dreams…subconscious….stealing….whatever. This is going to be amazing and the less I know (a rare feat with films) the better off I am.

By the way, the last line took me 10 times to break through that accent. When they are shooting the gun, Tom Hardy says “We mustin be afraid to dream a little bigger darling.” Fantastic.

The lastest trailer from Christopher “I Directed The Dark Knight” Nolan’s Inception has been released. More characters are shown, a vague snippet of plot is revealed, but we are still completely confused and intrigued by our most anticipated film of 2010. It appears there is a team of people doing something with dreams, thoughts…something. There’s lots of destruction. Trains driving in the middle of the street. I have no idea what’s going on…but considering Nolan’s track record (Following, Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight), I’m sold.

“What’s the most resilient parasite? An idea. A single idea from the human mind can build cities. An idea can transform the world and re-write all the rules; which is why I have to steal it.”

Yeah.  Your guess is as good as mine. The music score is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat as you can see from this trailer. And the cast is beyond stellar: Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Lucas Haas, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, and Ken Watanabe.

Although this initial poster is pretty uninspiring and repetitive, this film is the must see for Summer 2010. Boasting a cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Ken Watanabe, and Michael Caine, the odds of a misfire are fairly low.  Let’s also add the fact that Nolan has NEVER made a bad film (including his first project Following).  A new trailer for the film is rumored to be attached to Sherlock Holmes on Christmas Day. So there I was in the movie theater, munching on popcorn and playing Brickbreaker on the Blackberry.  In only a few short minutes, I’d finally see Quentin Tarantino’s latest film…something I’ve obsessed about since reading the script last summer.  It was Avatar Day and Inglorious Basterds opening day, but I suddenly realized (again) that it was also the trailer release of the secret little film called Inception. When the Warner Bros. logo appeared, I squealed and clapped like a little girl catching a live glimpse of the Jonas Brothers. It was here…

The trailer has about 15 seconds of actual film footage, but it’s a teaser that will make you curse the release date (Summer 2010).  For those who saw The Dark Knight in IMAX, you are probably still haunted by the Hans Zimmer pounding, screeching score throughout the film.  It kept you on the edge of your seats as it boomed throughout.  Zimmer has teamed up with Christopher Nolan (TDK) again, so please turn up the volume when watching this teaser.  I feel that the full effect of this teaser will not be felt through your computer screen, but at least you’ll get an idea of how wacked out cool this film might be.

Inception boasts an impressive cast alongside a superstar director.  Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, Tom Berenger, Lukas Haas, and Ken Watanabe.

My initial reaction to the trailer went straight to thoughts of The Matrix.  But it’s a psychological thriller, NOT a CGI heavy tentpole event.  Enjoy and expect to hear lot’s o’ news on this one as it’s one of our 2010 Obsessions.

And Inglorious Basterds has been on our Obsessions list from day one.

QT’s Inglorious Basterds releases 8/21/09.

James Cameron announces 8/21/09 is “Avatar Day” by previewing 15 minutes of mind blowing 3-D footage for the rabid fans at select theaters.

QT raises Cameron with a dose of Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight).

In just over a week, we will all get to see who really has the juice. An always celebrated new film from Tarantino or 15 minutes of Avatar?  It has just been announced, that the “hush-hush” yet highly anticipated Inception will premiere its first teaser trailer before Inglorious Basterds. Inception is the sci-fi inside the mind currently filming across the globe. It will be Christopher Nolan’s first film since The Dark Knight and boasts an impressive cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt , Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, and others.

Who will get the most buzz next week?

That’s all we got.  Oh, and that Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (seriously, again – when did he sell his soul to the devil), Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, and Tom Hardy all are attached to this $200 million dollar sci fi.

Note to Warner Brothers.  We know Dark Knight made a Trillion Dollars.  Please know that Nolan’s other non-Batman films did not perform strongly at the box office (Memento, Insomnia, The Prestige). $200 million budget?! Really? Consider also that The Dark Knight cost $185 million. And this one takes place “in the mind.”  Good luck with that.
