Are you taking the kids to How To Train Your Dragon (in 3D, of course) this weekend? What about the latest Noah Baumbach/Ben Stiller film, Greenberg? I’ve got a suggestion for you. Skip them both. Walk up to the ticket booth (or buy them early on Fandango) and repeat the following.

“Two for Hot Tub Time Machine.” The employee will give you a knowing downwards nod with a slight smirk. You’ll exchange an awkward moment. He knows what you’re in for. And you have no idea.

I had the opportunity to see this film over a month ago. I was looking forward to seeing Craig Robinson. Clark Duke went to the greatest university known to the human race, Loyola Marymount University, so of course I had to support him. John Cusack doesn’t make bad movies, does he? Rob Corddry was an after thought. He wasn’t even on my radar before seeing this film. One month later and his performance in Hot Tub Time Machine still haunts me. You think I’m kidding? I challenge you to erase “the bet” from your memory. He is always that random funny guy that pops in and out of movies (Old School, Blades of Glory, The Heartbreak Kid). This film he gets to shine. Be careful what you wish for. This movie is so wrong, so dumb, and so amazingly great.

In tribute to one of the greatest film titles of all time, I present you the greatest 2 minutes in a Hot Tub not involving booze, flexibility, and your neighbor’s backyard. Why this amazing song isn’t in the film is beyond me. Classic on all levels!

This entire blog could be dedicated to the Hollywood rape and pillaging of the 80′s. Last week we gave a few examples of remakes coming out this year (The Karate Kid, Red Dawn, The A-Team). But let’s not confuse remakes with reboots. Remakes are basically the same thing (storyline, characters, etc) with a modern twist. They are a cop out.  Reboots take the essence of the original and try to create something new and fresh for modern audiences. Although some reboots are misguided, others (the latest Star Trek comes to mind) are worthwhile and necessary to bring a strong franchise back into the fold.

Here are a few more remakes of 80′s classics potentially soiled for life by modern filmmakers:

Short Circuit (2011) – From the acclaimed director of Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

Robocop (2011) – Possibly directed by Darren Aronofsky

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2012) – Impossible to replace Steve Martin and Michael Caine

I have not yet heard of any John Hughes films being remade with Miley Cyrus taking the Molly Ringwald roles, but don’t underestimate the depths studios will go to make a buck.

The following movie trailer is very relevant in this conversation. It takes everything fun and cheesy from the 80′s raunchy comedies with a touch of 2010.

1) Let’s start with the title. Hot Tub Time Machine. That’s all I needed to hear to get onboard. I love Time Travel and who doesn’t love Hot Tubs? It’s a no brainer.

2) One of my favorite comic actors, Craig Robinson, is finally in a starring role. He seems to pop up in every comedy nowadays, which I have no problem with. If Craig Robinson or Danny McBride are in a film, I’ll probably see it.

So we have a perfect title and Craig Robinson…

3) The premise: After a night of drinking Red Bull and vodkas, a group of guys travel back in time to when they were younger cads. Perfect. And what year do they travel back to? 1986…ah yes.

4) This seems to be the latest film to join the sacred skiing genre. Have you ever seen Hot Dog: The Movie? What about 1990′s Ski Patrol?  I know…wow and wow. Unreal. This film seems to be channeling the greatness in BOTH of them.

6) Lastly, a man that not only understands films of the 80′s…he lived them. None other than John Cusack.
