Everyone Can Rest Easy: Avatar Tickets On Sale

We can fully admit, this Avatar pre-hype is getting out of hand.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, tickets for the “game changer” from James Cameron are already on sale at Fandango.com and Movietickets.com.  The film is released on December 18th, so this sale is 4 months early.  Cameron and the Fox team are really setting audiences up for bitter, angry disappointment. Nothing can live up to this type of hype.

“Audiences are hungry for fresh fare with original storytelling,” Fandango spokesman Harry Medved said. “And with ‘Avatar,’ you have no idea where the story is going to go.”

We really have no idea where this story is going to go. But if the movie geek mobs have their way, this story might be burned at the stake before it’s even released.

An Avatar Fireside Chat

temp1759

10 rows from the front and directly in the center. That’s where I sat on Avatar Day’s IMAX 3-D screening.  James Cameron declared to the world that Avatar would be a “game changer” and I was about to witness firsthand the game being changed. The theater was giddy with excitement, but surprisingly not entirely packed.

But let’s take a step back.  Two days prior to Avatar Day, the teaser trailer for Avatar was released. I could not load up the Apple HD video fast enough. In just a few moments, history would be make sweet love to my eyes. The Wizard of Oz showcased glorious technicolor.  The Jazz Singer let us hear dialogue for the first time on film. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? made me believe Bob Hoskins really talked to cartoon characters.  And Avatar would change the movie going experience forever.  At least that’s what I was told.  High expectations for a film are a double edged sword.  On one side, it’s a great thing. There is huge audience awareness. People have pre-conceived notions that something will be great. And the pre-release buzz might mute and bad press. On the flip side, the entire world is eager to prove these expectations to be wrong.  And an above average film might be judged unfairly. But I digress…

The video starts to play and my virginity is taken away. And so I watch it again. When the trailer ends after the second viewing, I was alarmed by something.  My life didn’t change. My eyeballs were still intact.  As one Nebraskan friend told me “That looks like three hours of my life I’m never going to get back…(and) to be honest, the colors are pretty, reminds me of World Of Warcraft…I’ll pass on this one.”

EXCLUSIVE! Avatar Teaser Trailer

Wow.

Here is the must see Avatar trailer. Imagine it on IMAX. Imagine it in 3-D.  James Cameron is talking up a big game changer for this one. Do you think this has the goods?  This initial footage eerily looks like a Dark Crystal/Apocalypto/Halo/ hybrid.  Hopefully the Avatar Day screening tomorrow (8/21/09) will shed more light into the details of this film.

For up to date details on everything Avatar (and other potentially fantastic films)…continue coming back  to Film Savior!

Check the Apple HD Version HERE

Official Synopsis: Avatar takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by James Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, Avatar delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

More info on upcoming “Avatar Day”

More details on the previously announced “Avatar Day” on August 21st.

  • The 15 minutes of footage will screen only in 3D at “select cinemas and IMAX theaters.”
  • “Details on locations and reserving tickets for this extraordinary and unprecedented experience will be announced soon.”
  • The worldwide trailer launch will be presented in all formats, including IMAX® 3-D, IMAX® 2-D, digital 3-D, digital 2-D, and 35mm 2-D. The trailer will also be available online.
  • Also on Avatar Day: “Ubisoft will unveil the trailer for their videogame James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game, and Mattel will reveal the action figures for the film’sAvatar and alien Na’vi characters.”

But more importantly…will this unique marketing push work? Will audience’s minds be so blown away that they march straight into line for the full December release? And how will this affect the Inglorious Basterds opening weekend? Will it bring more people to the theater who will want to watch a full length picture after 15 short minutes of Avatar? Or will the marketing push for Avatar Day be so loud that audiences forget Quentin Tarantino has a new film opening?

Avatar Day — will President Obama make this a national holiday?

National “Avatar” Day — Coming to a Theater Near You

Yesterday during the Avatar panel at Comic-Con, James Cameron made movie geeks across the universe poop their pants: 15 minutes of the film will be screened in digital theaters for free across the globe on August 21. It’s sort of a “put your money where your mouth is scenerio.”

_12483992012621

Cameron’s complete announcement:

We’re going to do something unprecedented. It’s a social marketing experiment. We’re going to take over as many IMAX 3D theaters and other select 3D theaters worldwide on August 21 and we’re going to let an international global audience come see 15 minutes of Avatar for free. It’s going to be Avatar day.

Will this “social experiment” help create buzz around the film and 3-D in general? James Cameron keeps calling it a game breaker, so we’ll see.  And how will this 8/21 date affect the opening of Inglorious Basterds (same day)? Time will tell….

First Look: James Cameron’s “Avatar”

What has James Cameron been doing all this time since Titanic (the last feature film he directed)?  He’s been developing a new 3-D technology that will be unveiled in his new film Avatar. The film releases this December 18th with Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver starring. To say we are extremely excited for this would be an understatement.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron showed 24 minutes of the film to exhibitors in Amsterdam yesterday. “The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades!” the always humble King of the World exclaimed.

Cameron encouraged theater owners to add 3-D capability as quickly as possible. But acknowledging Avatar will have to play in a mix of conventional and extra-dimensional venues due to insufficient number of 3-D auditoriums, he added, “I just want to say that I think ‘Avatar’ is going to play great in 3-D, 2-D, any ‘D.’ ” Humble indeed.
