Welcome to 2010!

Happy New Year!

Are you part of the 85% of the planet that has seen Avatar already?

Today, it’s back to reality. Back to the long haul of the month of January. Whether you’re in school, working, a stay at home parent…it’s all the same. January is a terrible month.  Winter break is over. Summer is a full 6 months away. Your boss is standing over your cube, mug in hand, wondering where those TPS reports are.  Hey, at least you have Valentine’s Day to look forward to! Phhrrrtt.

For the film obsessives like myself, January is especially excruciating.  It’s the dumping ground for Hollywood’s dead bodies. If a film comes out in January, steer clear of it. Don’t be fooled. If the studio had confidence in it, it would come out during Awards season (Oct-Dec), Summertime, or a variety of holiday weekends. Nothing happens in January, including people going to the movies. So unless you’re willing to shell out $12 to see The Tooth Fairy, Leap Year, or The Spy Next Door — stick to the Oscar contenders or head for the rentals.

The New Year’s Resolution I have for you millions of Film Savior readers is simple — stick to the basics. There are many sites where you can find the newest poster, casting rumor, or on-set drama of the big films coming your way. But most of those sites suck. At the end of the day, most of us do not work in Hollywood. The budget of a film is irrelevant. All you want to know is — Am I going to regret paying a babysitter $50 bucks to spend $30 bucks on a crappy movie? Or you’re wondering — Should I wait to add it to my Netflix queue…if so, is it worth my valuable time?

I’m here to save you from watching bad films and steer you towards the good ones. I’m also here to alert you of the disturbing trends coming to a theater near you. Such as the reboots. And the sudden obsession with remaking every classic film you’ve ever loved (you’ll be disturbed when you find out which ones).  You’ll still get updates on my most anticipated films of the year (You can find them under the “Obsessions” section), but it won’t be the day to day chatter.

This week we’ll look at the 1980′s classics that are getting abused (or possibly upgraded) by your favorite film studios. And I also have some great gems that you must watch during this terrible month of January.

So let the countdown begin — to get out of the doldrums of January thru March.  Sigh.
