1981 vs. 2010: Clash of the Titans Trailers

There’s a special place in my heart for the original Clash of the Titans. Do you remember the giant Scorpions? How about the Perseus vs. Medusa fight scene (Do NOT look into her eyes!)?  I love old school Claymation. There’s something brilliantly cheesy about it. Want to know what isn’t brilliant? CGI for the sake of CGI. Yes, we have the capability to create almost anything for the screen. But it isn’t always necessary. This was my main concern when I heard about the Clash of the Titans remake of the 1981 film version. The story remains the same. It focuses on the myth of Perseus and his quest to battle both Medusa and the Kraken monster in order to save the Princess Andromeda.  If we had overload of Claymation in 1981, imagine the amount of CGI in 2010.  Oh joy!

Last night, the teaser trailer for Clash of the Titans: When Steroids Attack was released.

Before watching both trailers, let’s compare a few casting notes.

Perseus

Original: Harry Hamlin

Remake: Sam Worthington

Edge – Hamlin. Sam Worthington must have sold his soul to the devil. He landed three major films before anyone knew who he was: Terminator: Salvation, Avatar, and Clash of the Titans. Hamlin didn’t do much before his version of Clash, but cmon, he’s Harry Hamlin.

Zeus

Original:Laurence Olivier

Remake: Liam Neeson

Edge – Tough call, but Neeson. Liam Neeson is a badass. Some of his worse films are decent just because he’s in them. Laurence Olivier is a classic actor. He starred in greats such as Wuthering Heights and Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca. He was also named as AFI’s #14 Greatest Male Actors of all Time. Still, Liam Neeson is a badass.

As you can see, I’m completely torn about the idea of this film. So my next step was to compare trailers of the 1981 Clash with 2010 Clash.

2010 Tagline: “Titans Will Clash” – CHEESY

1981 Tagline: “Before History…Beyond Imagination” – CLASSIC

2010 Music: “The Bird And The Worm” by the Used – TRYING TOO HARD

1981 Music: Some sort of classic film music – PERFECT

2010 Times “Clash” is said or written: 3 – JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT

1981 Times “Clash” is said or written:  8 – OVERKILL

So there you have it. I have no idea what to think of this remake. Right now I have a bad taste in my mouth about it. Maybe the remakes/reboots are wearing me out. Maybe a Clash of the Titans remake is just a bad idea. Or maybe I’m just too jaded.

Ask and you shall receive. Here are both trailers.
